Women’s Skirts Tailored, Chiang Mai: a tailored skirt fits the waist and hip independently rather than assuming a fixed ratio between them, which is the reason ready-made skirts so often stand away at the small of the back. A fitted skirt at or below the knee also needs a back vent for stride room and a lining to stop it riding up.
Skirt sizing assumes a fixed difference between waist and hip. Yours may be larger or smaller than the chart’s assumption, and if it is, no size will fit both.
Larger difference: a skirt that fits the hip stands away from the small of your back.
Smaller difference: a skirt that fits the waist strains across the hip.
The standard remedy, buying for the hip and taking in the waistband, causes the twisting problem described in the FAQ above. Pulling the waist in drags the side seams off vertical, and once they are off vertical, walking rotates the skirt on the body. It is one of those faults people assume is their own fault and it is entirely a pattern issue.
Straight or tailored is the most versatile: fitted through the hip with a gentle line to the hem.
Pencil is fitted throughout with a taper. The sharpest look and the least tolerant of a proportion mismatch. It requires a vent.
A-line is fitted at the waist and flares gently. More forgiving, more comfortable to walk in, and cooler in heat because it does not sit against the leg. Worth serious consideration in this climate.
Any fitted skirt at or below the knee needs a vent or a slit.
Without one your stride is limited to the skirt’s circumference at the knee. You either take shortened steps or you put all the strain on the centre back seam, which eventually fails there. A back vent of 15 to 20 centimetres restores a normal walk and lies closed when you stand still.
The fix for the most common complaint about fitted skirts.
A skirt rides up because the outer fabric grips tights or skin and each step drags it further. A lining breaks that contact: the lining stays put against the body and the skirt slides over it.
It should hang free at the hem with its own shorter vent matching the skirt’s.
Wool crepe is the standout for a tailored skirt. It resists creasing across the lap from sitting, holds a clean line, and is more breathable than its appearance suggests.
Cotton sateen and heavier cottons work in heat and need pressing more often. Avoid very soft or very light fabrics for a fitted shape, since the silhouette depends on the cloth holding a line.
If the skirt is part of a suit, it must be cut from the same roll as the jacket.

Both are fully professional in almost every modern workplace. Trousers are more practical for travel, long days and air-conditioning; a skirt reads as marginally more formal in some traditional settings. Choose on comfort rather than on any supposed rule.
Just below the knee. It works in professional settings, suits most heights, and does not depend on heels to carry. Mid-calf changes the proportion considerably and above the knee reads as less formal.
Usually because the waist was taken in on a skirt cut for a larger waist, which pulls the side seams out of vertical. Once the seams are off the vertical, walking rotates the whole skirt. It is a pattern problem and cannot be fixed by further alteration.
For anything fitted, yes. The lining stops the outer fabric clinging to tights or skin and lets the skirt slide rather than ride up. In heat, a lighter lining fabric keeps most of the benefit with less warmth.
