Women’s Overcoat Tailored, Chiang Mai: a women’s overcoat must be fitted over the clothing it will be worn on top of, and its proportions matter more than in menswear because coat length interacts with the skirts and dresses worn under it. A coat that ends mid-skirt reads as an accident, so length should be chosen against the hemlines already in your wardrobe.
This matters more in womenswear than in menswear, and it is the decision most often made carelessly.
A men’s overcoat has one real constraint: cover the suit jacket. A women’s overcoat is worn over skirts and dresses of varying lengths, and where the coat hem falls relative to those hemlines determines whether the whole outfit reads as considered.
The rule is simple. The coat should end clearly above or clearly below the hemlines you actually wear, never at roughly the same point. Two near-identical horizontal lines a few centimetres apart look like a mistake.
If you wear skirts and dresses regularly, below the knee is the most versatile, because it covers essentially everything. If you live mostly in trousers, the length is free and a knee-length or shorter coat is easier to move in.
Same principle as men’s overcoats and worth the same emphasis.
A coat measured over a shirt in a warm shop will not close over a jacket and a knit in February. Dense coating cloth has no stretch, so a coat that feels merely snug in the fitting room is restrictive in use.
Bring the jacket or the heaviest knitwear the coat must cover. If you cannot, measure them flat and describe them precisely so the allowance goes into the pattern.
Women’s coats are frequently cut with insufficient room across the bust, on the assumption that they will be worn open.
That assumption gives up half the garment. A coat you cannot fasten is not doing the job a coat exists to do, and in genuine cold it is not a stylistic choice.
Ask for it to close cleanly over your intended layers, with no strain at the button and no lapels angling away from the chest. It should then look correct both open and fastened, which is most of its versatility.
Straight or slightly A-line is the most practical and accommodates skirts underneath.
Belted defines the waist and flatters most shapes. Specify a proper self-belt with belt loops rather than a thin strip, and accept that it hangs awkwardly when the coat is worn open.
Double-breasted is warmer across the chest and more formal, and must stay fastened to look right.
Wool melton and coating wools for genuine cold. A wool-cashmere blend adds softness at the collar where it touches the neck, while keeping wool’s durability.
Choose weight for the destination, not for the shop: 400 to 550 grams for a real winter coat.
Camel is beautiful and shows marks. Charcoal and navy are more practical and work over almost anything.

Either clearly above or clearly below the hemlines you normally wear. A coat that ends at roughly the same point as your skirts and dresses creates a competing horizontal line and reads as accidental. Below the knee is the most versatile if you wear skirts and dresses regularly.
It must close comfortably over a jacket or heavy knitwear without straining at the closure. Coats are frequently cut with insufficient bust allowance because they are assumed to be worn open, which quietly gives up half their function.
Yes, for the same reason as menswear: a hand-finished coat is labour intensive and labour is a large share of its cost. Fit it over the layers it will cover, and choose cloth weight for the destination rather than for how it feels in a warm shop.
A belt defines the waist and is genuinely flattering on most shapes, and it should be a proper self-belt with belt loops rather than a thin afterthought. Bear in mind a belted coat cannot be worn open as neatly, since the belt then hangs loose.
