Ladies Dress Tailor, Chiang Mai: the advantage of a made dress is that bust, waist and hip are fitted independently, which standard sizing cannot do because it assumes a fixed relationship between them. For a dress that will be worn repeatedly rather than once, a restrained shape in a fabric that recovers from creasing outperforms a striking design in a delicate one.
A dress is fitted at bust, waist and hip simultaneously, and those three are independent of one another.
Standard sizing prints one number and assumes a fixed relationship between all three. For most people at least one of them is off, so every ready-made dress becomes a compromise: buy for the bust and the waist is loose, buy for the waist and nothing closes.
A drafted dress treats them as three separate inputs. There is no compromise because there is no average being fitted to. This is the clearest single argument for having a dress made rather than bought and altered.
If the dress is for one specific event and will not be worn again, choose freely.
If it is going into rotation, which most dresses do, restraint pays. A deep solid colour in a well-cut shape is worn to four events across two years without anyone registering that it is the same dress. A distinctive print or an unusual silhouette is memorable the first time and conspicuous the third.
The interest should come from the cut: a precisely placed seam, a defined waist, a neckline shaped to your shoulders. That reads as expensive and stays looking good. Applied beading reads as expensive at a distance and cheapens on inspection.
Crease recovery is the property nobody asks about and the one that determines how a dress looks at six in the evening.
Wool crepe is the standout. Its crimped yarn has genuine elasticity, so it springs back from sitting rather than holding a fold, and it drapes and holds structure at the same time.
Silk crepe is the equivalent for softer, dressier shapes. See silk.
Structured cotton holds shape and presses crisply, and creases more.
Pure linen is the coolest and the wrong choice for anything that must look sharp all day.
The most overlooked measurement in a dress.
A low, generous armhole feels roomy standing still and restricts you the moment you raise your arm, because the whole dress lifts with it. A higher, closer armhole feels snugger and gives more freedom, since the sleeve moves independently of the body.
Mass production cuts armholes low because it is faster. It is one of the clearest practical advantages of having a dress made.
Photographs communicate necklines, silhouettes and lengths instantly. Bring several, including ones showing what to avoid.
Better still, bring a dress you already like. See dresses for the full range.

Weight enough to hang cleanly, matte surface, forgiving of construction.~16 momme

Yes, and it is the most reliable brief you can give. A dress that already fits encodes your proportions and your preferences at the same time. Bring it in, and anything you dislike about it can be corrected in the new version rather than reproduced.
As early in your trip as possible. A dress needs at least one proper fitting and benefits from two, because bust darts, waist suppression and hip room all interact, so adjusting one affects the others. Bring images on your first visit rather than your last.
Wool crepe first, for anything structured: it recovers from creasing across the lap, holds shape and drapes cleanly. Silk crepe for softer, dressier shapes. Structured cotton for anything that needs to look crisp. Avoid pure linen for a dress that must look sharp late in the day.
Yes, several, including images of things you do not like. Necklines and silhouettes are instantly recognisable and hard to describe. We will be honest about what suits your proportions and what the fabric will actually do.
