Women’s Blouses Tailored, Chiang Mai: a blouse worn under a jacket and a blouse worn alone are different garments and should be cut differently. Under a jacket it needs a slimmer sleeve that will not bunch and a collar that sits flat beneath a lapel; worn alone it can take a fuller sleeve and more detail, because all of it will be seen.

Women’s Blouses Tailored, Chiang Mai: two different garments

The first question is where the blouse will live, because it changes the pattern.

Under a jacket. The sleeve must be slim enough to slide inside a jacket sleeve without bunching at the elbow, which is the most common complaint about blouses worn with blazers. The collar or neckline has to sit flat within the lapel line rather than fighting it. The fabric wants some body so it does not cling under a layer.

Worn alone. Now the sleeve can be fuller, the collar can be more interesting, and details like a tie neck or a gathered cuff earn their place, because all of them will actually be seen.

A blouse made to do both does neither especially well. Say which at the order stage.

Tucked or out

The other decision that has to be made before cutting.

A blouse cut for tucking is longer, so it stays down when you raise your arms. A blouse cut to be worn out is shorter with a straighter hem and finishes at a deliberate point, usually between the top and middle of the hip.

A long tucking blouse worn out looks like it has been pulled loose. A short one tucked in comes out during the day.

Solve the gaping

Covered fully on the blouses page and worth repeating because it is the reason most women consider having one made.

Gaping between buttons at the bust is a bust-to-shoulder ratio problem, not a size problem. The right fix is a properly placed dart or seam that adds room exactly where it is needed. Going up a size fixes the gap and leaves the shoulders, sleeves and waist too large.

A concealed placket is the other route: it removes the visible button line entirely and produces a clean, uninterrupted front.

Fabric

Silk crepe at around 16 momme is the practical default: enough weight to hang cleanly, matte surface, properly opaque, and forgiving of construction. See silk blouses.

Fine cotton in voile, lawn or poplin is crisper, cooler, and holds shape better. The right choice for anything that needs to look sharp.

Linen is the coolest and creases immediately, which suits a relaxed blouse and not a professional one.

Pale colours show perspiration marks readily, which is a real consideration in this climate. Mid and deep tones are more practical for daily wear.

Common questions

Start with one to prove the pattern, then order more from it. Two or three in different fabrics covers most needs, since a blouse is usually paired with jackets and trousers you already own rather than needing variety of its own.

Decide before it is cut, because the length differs. A blouse for tucking is cut longer so it stays put when you raise your arms. One for wearing out is cut shorter with a straighter hem so it finishes at a deliberate point.

A slimmer sleeve so it does not bunch inside the jacket sleeve, a collar or neckline that sits cleanly within the lapel line, and a fabric with enough body that it does not cling. Silk crepe at around 16 momme is a reliable specification.

Yes. A concealed placket hides the buttons behind a fold of fabric, giving a clean unbroken front. It also removes the gaping question entirely, since there is no visible button line to pull apart.
