Women’s Blazer Tailored, Chiang Mai: a women’s blazer is the most useful tailored garment to have made, because it is worn as a standalone piece far more often than as part of a suit. The fit problem to solve is the closure: a jacket that gapes at the button or whose lapels angle away from the chest has insufficient bust allowance in the pattern.
Women’s blazers are bought as part of suits and worn as separates. That gap between how they are sold and how they are used is worth designing around.
A blazer that lives its life over dresses, jeans, trousers of a different colour and knitwear has different requirements from a suit jacket. It wants to look complete on its own, which argues for cloth with some texture or interest, and for a length and shape that work over more than one thing.
Say how you actually intend to wear it, because it changes the cut.
The most visible fit failure in women’s tailoring, and the one that most clearly separates a made jacket from a bought one.
A jacket whose lapels point away from the chest, or which pulls into horizontal creases at the button, does not have enough room across the bust. The pattern was drawn for a smaller bust-to-shoulder ratio than yours.
The industry workaround is to design jackets that are only ever worn open, which quietly concedes the problem. A properly drafted jacket, using a bust dart or a princess seam placed to your actual apex, closes cleanly and looks correct both open and fastened. That is what you are buying.
The shoulder seam should end at the outer point of your shoulder, with the sleeve falling cleanly from it.
It is the one dimension that cannot be altered afterwards without rebuilding the top of the jacket, so it is fitted first and everything else is drafted around it. A jacket bought to fit the bust with shoulders two sizes too wide is the most common compromise in ready-made womenswear, and it reads as borrowed.
Hip length is the most versatile and works over trousers, skirts and dresses.
Cropped is a strong style choice, works well over high-waisted trousers, and is less flexible.
Longer, tunic length reads as more contemporary and needs some height to carry.
A single-breasted jacket with a moderate lapel is the versatile default. A double-breasted jacket is a stronger statement and must stay buttoned.
Wool crepe deserves particular mention. It resists creasing, holds a defined shape, drapes cleanly and is more breathable than it looks, which makes it excellent for this climate.
Lightweight worsted works well, particularly if the blazer needs to match suit trousers or a skirt cut from the same roll.

Tailored blazers and odd jackets made to measure in Chiang Mai. The most useful garment you can own if you rarely need a full suit.
Insufficient bust allowance in the pattern. The fabric is being asked to travel further across the chest than it was cut for, so the front pulls apart and the lapels angle outward. Buying a larger size adds room everywhere else instead of where it is needed.
It should be cut so that both work. A blazer that only looks right open has usually been cut to disguise a closure that does not fit. One that closes cleanly gives you both options, which is most of its versatility.
Navy or black for professional settings, since both work over almost anything. A neutral such as camel or stone is the more interesting second. If the blazer is intended to work with an existing suit skirt or trousers, match the cloth exactly.
Yes, and it is worth specifying. A blazer worn over dresses wants a slightly shorter length and a cleaner hem so it sits well over a skirt, and a sleeve cut to clear a dress sleeve without bunching.
