Formal Waistcoat, Chiang Mai: a formal waistcoat for black tie is cut lower than a suit waistcoat so it sits below the dinner jacket’s closure, and it is often made backless, with just a strap, so it covers the trouser waist without adding a full layer. It is one of the two correct ways to cover the waist at black tie, the other being a cummerbund.

Formal Waistcoat, Chiang Mai: what it is for

At black tie, the trouser waist must be covered. That is the actual rule, and both the waistcoat and the cummerbund exist to satisfy it.

The reason is that black tie trousers take no belt. Without something covering the waist you have an exposed waistband and a shirt tucked into it, which breaks the unbroken line the dress code is built around.

So you choose one. Never both, which looks like an error of enthusiasm. Never neither.

Cut lower than a suit waistcoat

A formal waistcoat is not a suit waistcoat in black cloth.

Its opening is cut lower and wider, so that when the dinner jacket is fastened, the waistcoat’s V sits inside the jacket’s V rather than crowding it. A standard suit waistcoat worn under a dinner jacket rides too high, and the two necklines fight.

It must still cover the trouser waistband completely when you sit, which is the same requirement as any waistcoat and the same failure point.

Backless, and why that is not a shortcut

A backless formal waistcoat has fronts, a neck strap and a waist strap, and no back panel.

This sounds like a cost saving and is actually a considered design. At black tie the dinner jacket is not removed, so the back of the waistcoat is never seen. Removing it eliminates an entire layer of cloth across the back.

In Chiang Mai’s climate, that is a substantial difference across a long evening. It is one of the few genuinely free improvements in formal dress.

If there is any chance you will remove the jacket, a full back is needed, but at a properly formal event you should not be removing it.

Black, not white

A white piqué waistcoat is white tie, worn with a tailcoat, and it is a materially more formal dress code. Wearing white with a dinner jacket is a visible mistake to anyone who knows the difference, and it is unfortunately common.

The cummerbund alternative

Cooler, simpler, easier to pack, and entirely correct.

The pleats face upward. This is often explained as a place to keep theatre tickets, which may be apocryphal, but the direction is the convention regardless.

In genuine heat, a cummerbund with a dinner jacket is the more comfortable of the two options and nobody will think less of it.

Common questions

Either is correct, never both and never neither. A waistcoat is slightly more formal and stays neater through an evening. A cummerbund is cooler to wear, which matters in a hot climate, and is simpler to pack. The requirement is only that the trouser waist is covered.

A formal waistcoat with only the fronts and a neck and waist strap, no back panel. Since the back is entirely hidden by the dinner jacket, which is never removed at black tie, the back panel serves no purpose and removing it makes the garment considerably cooler.

Black, to match the dinner jacket, for black tie. A white piqué waistcoat belongs to white tie, which is a different and far more formal dress code, and wearing one with a dinner jacket is a common and conspicuous error.

Low enough that its opening sits below the dinner jacket’s button when fastened, so the waistcoat’s V is visible within the jacket’s V rather than competing with it. It must still fully cover the trouser waistband.
