A waistcoat is the third piece of a three-piece suit, cut to sit close to the body with no ease. VIP Custom Tailor makes waistcoats to individual measurements in Chiang Mai. The most common fault in ready-made waistcoats is length: it must cover the trouser waistband completely when you stand and when you sit, or a strip of shirt appears at the waist.

Custom Waistcoat, Chiang Mai: no ease to hide in

A jacket is cut with ease, meaning deliberate extra room that lets it drape and move. A waistcoat has essentially none. It sits against the body, and every error is visible.

That is why waistcoats are the garment where made-to-measure most obviously beats ready-made. There is no slack to absorb a mismatch between your proportions and an average.

Length, the fault that matters

The waistcoat must cover the trouser waistband entirely.

Not just when you are standing still with your arms down. When you sit, when you reach, when you turn. If a band of shirt appears between the bottom of the waistcoat and the top of the trousers, the whole outfit falls apart, and it is exactly what a three-piece was supposed to prevent.

Ready-made waistcoats are cut short because it is cheaper to make one length and because sizing is based on chest alone. Your torso length is its own measurement, and this is the garment where it matters most.

The back

Most waistcoats have a back made from lining rather than suiting cloth, with an adjustable buckle. It is lighter, cooler, and invisible under a jacket.

If you intend to wear the waistcoat without a jacket, which is common in this climate, ask for a full-cloth back instead. Otherwise you will be walking around in what is visibly a half-finished garment from behind.

This decision has to be made at the order stage, so think about how you will actually wear it.

The bottom button

Leave it undone, on any waistcoat with a shaped or notched bottom edge.

The reason is practical rather than ceremonial: the hem is cut on an angle so that it sits open. Fastening it drags the front out of shape and creates a pull line across the stomach. Waistcoats with a straight level hem are designed to fasten all the way.

In a hot climate

A three-piece adds a layer, and in Chiang Mai that is a real consideration.

For a wedding or a formal occasion it is worth it, and it photographs beautifully. For daily wear in the heat it is a lot. If you want a three-piece for an event, choose a lighter cloth than you otherwise would and take the cloth-backed option only if you plan to remove the jacket.

See three-piece suits for how the pieces work together, and wedding suits if that is the occasion driving the order.

Common questions

Long enough to fully cover the trouser waistband both standing and seated. If a gap of shirt appears at the waist when you sit or raise your arms, the waistcoat is too short. This is the most common fault in ready-made waistcoats and the main reason to have one made.

Yes, on a waistcoat with a straight hem and a notched bottom edge. The convention exists because the shaped hem is cut to sit open, and fastening it pulls the garment out of line. Waistcoats with a level hem are fastened all the way.

Yes, and it is common in hot climates. Bear in mind the back of most waistcoats is made in lining rather than suiting cloth, since it is normally hidden. If you intend to wear it jacketless, ask for a full-cloth back.

Yes, it adds a layer over the torso. In Chiang Mai’s climate a three-piece is usually an occasion garment rather than daily wear. A lighter cloth and a cloth back rather than a lining back both help.
