Dress Trousers Tailored, Chiang Mai: dress trousers are tailored trousers in smooth worsted cloth, cut to sit at or near the natural waist with a clean line and no belt loops where side adjusters are used. They are distinguished from casual trousers by cloth smoothness, a higher rise, and finished details such as a curtained waistband and a lined seat.
Everything on the trousers hub about rise applies double to dress trousers.
Dress trousers are worn under a jacket, and the jacket makes the rise more important rather than less. A low-rise trouser under a buttoned jacket leaves a gap where shirt shows between the top of the trouser and the bottom button, which is precisely the untidy line a suit is supposed to eliminate.
Sitting at or just below the natural waist solves it, gives a longer leg line, and is noticeably more comfortable across a working day.
Smooth worsted wool, matched in weight to the jacket if the trousers are part of a suit.
For separate dress trousers, mid-grey worsted is the most useful single pair anyone can own. It works under a navy blazer, under a sport coat, and with almost any jacket that is not itself grey.
In Chiang Mai’s heat, the same rules apply as for suiting: around 240 to 260 grams in an open weave.
Side adjusters are the cleanest option and the right one for anything worn with a jacket or a waistcoat. No belt means no buckle interrupting the line and no bulk under a buttoned jacket.
Belt loops are more flexible if the trousers will also be worn casually.
Braces buttons are the traditional formal option and give the best hang of all three, because the trousers are suspended from the shoulders rather than gripped at the waist.
Forward-facing pleats add room through the hip and thigh without adding bulk at the waist.
They suit fuller thighs, heavier cloths, and a higher rise. They also allow a more generous leg without looking baggy. A flat front is cleaner and more modern and works best on slimmer builds.
Pleats have a dated reputation earned by the very full cuts of the 1980s and 90s. A single forward pleat on a well-proportioned trouser is not that.
A curtained waistband, a lined seat, a proper hook-and-bar closure rather than a button, and a brace of buttons inside the waistband if you want the option.
None of these are visible when worn, and together they are most of what separates a good trouser from an ordinary one.

A turn-up, or cuff, adds weight to the hem which helps the trouser hang cleanly, and it suits pleated and heavier trousers. Plain hems are cleaner and slightly more formal. Turn-ups are a matter of preference except with black tie, where they are incorrect.
At or just below the natural waist, which is higher than most modern ready-made trousers sit. A higher rise is more comfortable seated, keeps the shirt from pulling out, and gives a longer, cleaner leg line under a jacket.
A partial lining to the knee at the front helps the trouser hang and stops lighter cloths from clinging or seating. In very hot weather an unlined trouser is more comfortable, and the trade-off is worth discussing at the order stage.
A waistband finished with a decorative and functional strip of fabric on the inside, left partly free rather than stitched flat. It lets the waistband be adjusted more easily later and finishes the inside of the trouser properly. It is a marker of a well-made trouser.
