Tailored Chinos, Chiang Mai: a chino is a cotton twill trouser, less formal than worsted wool and more structured than a casual cotton. Having them made solves the two faults common to ready-made chinos: a rise cut too short for most torsos, and a seat cut flat when most people are not.

Tailored Chinos, Chiang Mai: what a made-to-measure chino fixes

Chinos are among the most commonly bought and most poorly fitting trousers people own, and the faults are consistent.

The rise is too short. Mass-market chinos are cut low, which means the waistband sits on the hip rather than in the natural hollow above it. It slides down through the day and pulls at the seat when you sit.

The seat is cut flat. Ready-made patterns assume a fairly flat seat. For anyone with more shape there, the fabric pulls into diagonal creases below the waistband, which no amount of taking in the waist resolves because the problem is the shape of the pattern, not its size.

The thigh and hem do not relate. Off-the-rack chinos often pair a generous thigh with a narrow hem, which produces a shape that flatters almost nobody.

All three are pattern problems. That is what having them made actually buys you.

Cloth

Cotton twill is the defining fabric. The weight matters more than most people check.

Lighter cotton twill around 230 to 260 grams is the sensible choice for Chiang Mai. It breathes, it takes a press, and it does not feel like canvas in humidity.

Heavier twill at 300 grams and above is the traditional chino weight, hard-wearing and better suited to cooler places. It also holds a crease better and softens attractively over years of wear.

Cotton-linen blends are cooler again and crease more, which suits a genuinely relaxed trouser.

Details

Flat front is the modern default and the cleaner look.

A single forward pleat is worth considering if you have fuller thighs, because it adds room through the hip without adding bulk at the waist.

Belt loops, since chinos are almost always worn with a belt. Side adjusters on a chino read as slightly confused.

Cuffed or plain hem. A turn-up adds weight to the hem, which helps a lighter cotton hang straight, and it suits the informality.

Wearing them

Chinos are the workhorse of smart-casual. Stone chinos with a navy blazer is one of the most reliable combinations available, and works from a lunch meeting to a dinner.

They also pair well with a sport coat, where the smooth cotton contrasts against a textured jacket cloth exactly as an odd-jacket combination should.

For anything requiring a genuine suit-level formality, go to dress trousers instead.

Common questions

Cloth and construction. Chinos are cotton twill, usually with a flat front, belt loops and a slightly more casual finish. Dress trousers are smooth worsted wool with a higher rise and often side adjusters. Chinos sit below dress trousers and above jeans in formality.

Cotton moves on the first few washes, mostly in length. A well-made chino is cut allowing for it, and washing cool with a line dry keeps the change minimal. Hot tumble drying is what causes real shrinkage.

Stone or sand first, since they work with almost any jacket and any shoe. Navy second, which reads slightly smarter. Olive is a good third. Avoid very pale or very bright colours for a first pair.

Yes, and it is one of the most useful combinations in menswear. A navy blazer with stone chinos works in nearly any smart-casual setting. Keep the chino clean and well pressed, since the pairing depends on the trouser looking deliberate.
