Tailor Near Me, Chiang Mai: the short version

Chiang Mai’s tailoring is concentrated in one area: Changklan Road, running alongside the Night Bazaar, in the Chang Khlan district just east of the old city moat.

You do not need to search neighbourhood by neighbourhood. Go to Changklan Road and you will be within a few hundred metres of most of the established shops in the city.

Getting there from where you probably are

Staying in the Night Bazaar area: you can walk. Most hotels here are within ten minutes.

Staying in the old city: roughly ten minutes by songthaew, tuk-tuk or Grab. Ask for the Night Bazaar and then Changklan Road.

Staying by the river: similarly short, and Changklan runs parallel to the river a couple of blocks west.

Nimmanhaemin: about fifteen to twenty minutes depending on traffic.

You can just walk in

No appointment is needed. Walking in to look at cloth, ask questions and get a sense of the shop is completely normal and there is no obligation to order.

Three questions to ask any tailor

You will find many shops within a short walk. These are the questions that actually separate them.

“What construction do you use inside the jacket?” The answer should be fused, half canvas or full canvas, given without hesitation, with an explanation of the difference. Deflection here tells you a great deal.

“How many fittings will I get?” A fitting is where fit problems get caught. No fitting means you are buying measurements and hope.

“How many reviews do you have?” Not the star rating. Almost every shop shows five stars, because a shop with a dozen reviews can maintain that indefinitely. Volume is much harder to manage.

Come during the day

Worth knowing if you are planning to combine it with the night market.

Cloth selection is a colour judgement and market lighting is unreliable for it. Charcoal and midnight navy look nearly identical under warm evening light and obviously different in daylight. Choose cloth in the day, walk the market at night. See the Night Bazaar page.
