Men’s Trousers Tailored, Chiang Mai: three pairs of trousers cover most of a year: mid-grey worsted, stone cotton chinos, and navy or charcoal worsted. Trousers are the cheapest tailored garment to have made and the one that multiplies what the jackets you already own can do, which makes them the highest-return order after a first suit.
Once you own a suit and a jacket, trousers are the most efficient thing to have made.
They are the cheapest tailored garment. They are the one where ready-made fails most consistently, because rise and seat shape are exactly what mass-market patterns average away. And every pair multiplies the jackets you already own, because each new trouser creates several new correct combinations rather than one.
Two jackets and three trousers produce more usable outfits than four suits, at lower cost.
Mid-grey worsted. The most useful trouser in existence as a separate. It works under a navy blazer, under any sport coat, in any professional setting, with black or brown shoes. If you order one pair, order this.
Stone cotton chinos. The relaxed counterpart. Navy jacket with stone chinos is one of the most reliable combinations in menswear and covers everything from a lunch meeting to a dinner. See chinos.
Navy or charcoal worsted. Slightly more formal than grey, useful when the jacket is patterned or lighter.
Those three, with a navy blazer and one suit, will handle a year.
The most common mistake with separates is insufficient contrast.
A grey jacket with slightly different grey trousers does not read as a deliberate combination. It reads as a suit whose halves have faded differently, which is worse than either garment alone.
Make the difference unmistakable in both colour and texture. A textured navy hopsack jacket over smooth mid-grey worsted trousers works because both dimensions differ. Smooth navy over smooth grey is weaker, and smooth grey over smooth grey fails.
Rise. The measurement ready-made gets most wrong, and the one most responsible for comfort. See trousers for the argument.
Waist finish. Side adjusters for anything worn with a jacket buttoned or with a waistcoat. Belt loops for chinos and general wear.
Break. Slight, for most people, decided with the shoes on.
Every time, and the right ones. Hem length is set from the shoe, and the difference between a dress shoe and a trainer changes the break entirely.
If a pair will genuinely be worn with both, say so and we will find a length that carries both reasonably rather than one that looks correct with neither.

If you only own one tailored jacket, make it a blazer. Why an odd jacket does more work than a second suit for most men.
Mid-grey worsted. It works under a navy blazer, under almost any sport coat, and in any professional setting. It is the single most useful pair of trousers a man can own as a separate.
Three covers most of a year: mid-grey worsted, stone chinos and a darker worsted in navy or charcoal. Together with one or two jackets they produce a surprising number of distinct, correct outfits.
Yes, and they are the best value in tailoring. They are the cheapest garment to make, the rise and seat are what ready-made trousers get most wrong, and each pair multiplies what your existing jackets can do.
Contrast, when worn as separates, and clearly. A near-match reads as a failed attempt at a suit. Keep both colour and texture obviously different, which is why a smooth grey trouser under a textured jacket works and a smooth grey trouser under a smooth grey jacket does not.
