Men’s Blazers Tailored, Chiang Mai: for most men a blazer is more useful than a second suit, because it covers the large territory between a suit and a shirt on its own. A navy hopsack blazer worn with grey trousers or stone chinos handles dinners, meetings, travel and smart-casual events that a suit would overdress.

Men’s Blazers Tailored, Chiang Mai: the gap a suit cannot fill

Think about the occasions in an actual year.

Dinners. Client meetings at companies with no dress code. Travel. Drinks after work. A gallery opening. A smart-casual wedding. Meeting a partner’s parents.

In nearly all of these a full suit is slightly too formal and a shirt alone is slightly too little. That gap is large, it is where most modern social and professional life sits, and it is exactly what a blazer covers.

A second suit, by contrast, duplicates capability you already have. It gives you a change of colour on days you already had a solution for.

So if you own one suit and are deciding what to have made next, the answer is usually a blazer and a pair of trousers rather than another suit.

Navy hopsack, if you buy one

Hopsack is a wool woven in an open basket structure. It has visible texture, which is what makes an odd jacket read as deliberate, and its openness moves air, which matters here.

In navy it works with grey trousers, with stone chinos, with almost any shirt, and in almost any setting short of formal.

It also resists creasing well, which makes it a good travel jacket.

Why your suit jacket does not substitute

People try this and it rarely works.

Suit cloth is woven and finished to be smooth and to read as half of a matched pair. Separated from its trousers it looks incomplete rather than intentional, and the mismatch is more obvious the finer the cloth.

Texture is the signal. A jacket in hopsack, flannel, tweed or linen announces that it was always meant to stand alone.

Build it light

For Chiang Mai, less construction is better.

Half lining or no lining removes a full layer across the back. A softer shoulder with minimal padding reads as more relaxed and suits the garment’s purpose. You give up some of the sharp architecture of a business jacket, which in this context is a gain.

If the jacket is going home to a colder country, the calculation reverses.

The buttons

The cheapest upgrade available. Horn, corozo or leather-covered buttons in a tone picked from the cloth make a jacket look considered. Matching plastic buttons make it look like half a suit that lost its trousers.

See blazers for construction and sport coats for the more textured, more casual end of the same idea.

Common questions

For most men, yes. A second suit duplicates capability you already have. A blazer covers the ground between a suit and a shirt, which is where most modern events sit. If you own one suit, the next tailored garment should usually be a blazer and a pair of trousers.

Navy, and it is not a close call. It works with grey trousers, stone chinos, and almost anything else, in almost any setting. A textured navy hopsack is the most useful single tailored garment most men can own.

Usually not well. Suit cloth is smooth and finished to read as part of a set, so alone it looks like the trousers are missing. Texture is what makes an odd jacket look deliberate rather than orphaned.

Half lining or none is far more comfortable and looks more relaxed, which suits the garment. Removing the lining takes a full layer off the back and torso and costs nothing in appearance.
