Work Dress Tailored, Chiang Mai: a work dress has to survive a full day of sitting, moving and air-conditioning, which makes crease recovery and sleeve mobility more important than they are in an occasion dress. A wool crepe or a structured cotton in a simple shape will outperform a lighter fabric that looks better at nine in the morning.

Work Dress Tailored, Chiang Mai: designed for eight hours

A work dress fails in specific, predictable ways, and all of them happen after lunch.

It creases across the lap from sitting. It rides up when you stand. The sleeve binds when you reach across a desk or lift a bag. The neckline shifts and needs adjusting. None of these appear in a fitting room, and all of them are solvable at the design stage.

Fabric first

Crease recovery is the property that matters most and the one nobody asks about.

Wool crepe is the standout. The crimped yarn gives it a slightly textured surface with real elasticity, so it springs back from sitting rather than holding a fold. It drapes well, takes structure, and looks appropriate in any professional setting. It is also more breathable than people expect.

Structured cotton, such as a sateen or a fine twill, holds shape and is cooler to wear. It creases more than wool crepe and presses easily.

Ponte and knit blends are extremely comfortable and forgiving, and read as less formal.

Pure linen is the wrong answer for a dress that must look sharp late in the day, however comfortable it is.

The armhole decides the day

This is the most overlooked measurement in a work dress.

A low, generous armhole feels roomy standing still and restricts you the moment you raise your arm, because the whole dress lifts with it. A higher, closer armhole feels snugger and actually gives more freedom, since the sleeve moves independently of the body of the dress.

Mass-produced clothing cuts armholes low because it is faster and it fits a wider range of bodies badly rather than a narrow range well. It is one of the clearest advantages of having a dress made.

Shape

Simple shapes work hardest.

A sheath or a slightly A-line dress with a defined waist and a knee-length skirt will carry more occasions than anything more complicated. It works alone, it works under a blazer, and it does not announce itself.

Add a back vent if the skirt is fitted and at or below the knee, for the same reason a pencil skirt needs one: you have to be able to walk normally.

Under a jacket

If the dress will be worn under a jacket, say so before anything is cut.

A slimmer sleeve stops the dress bunching inside the jacket sleeve. A neckline that sits cleanly within the lapel line avoids the two competing. Both are simple to plan for and impossible to fix afterwards. See women’s tailoring for jackets.

Common questions

Wool crepe or a structured cotton. Both hold their shape, resist creasing and breathe reasonably. Wool crepe is the better performer and reads as more formal; cotton is cooler and needs pressing more often. Avoid pure linen for a dress that must look sharp at 5pm.

A sleeve or at least a proper shoulder makes a dress more versatile in a professional setting and much more comfortable under a jacket. A short or three-quarter sleeve is a good compromise in a hot climate.

Choose fabric with elasticity and texture. Wool crepe and textured cottons recover far better than smooth flat weaves. Creasing at the lap is caused by sitting and cannot be tailored away, only mitigated by fabric choice.

Yes, and it should be planned for. A dress meant to be worn under a jacket needs a slimmer sleeve so it does not bunch, and a neckline that works with the jacket’s lapel line. Say so at the order stage.
