VIP Custom Tailor makes dresses to individual measurements in Chiang Mai, including evening, cocktail and work dresses. Because a dress is fitted through the bust, waist and hip simultaneously, it is the garment where standard sizing fails most often, since those three measurements rarely fall in the same size for the same person.

Custom Dress, Chiang Mai: why standard sizing fails here

A dress is fitted at three points at once: bust, waist and hip.

For a dress to fit off the rack, all three of your measurements have to land in the same size, and for most people they simply do not. A size that fits the bust gapes at the waist. A size that fits the hip is tight across the chest. The usual compromise is to buy for the largest measurement and have the rest taken in, which works up to a point and stops working as soon as the design has any real structure.

A drafted dress starts from your three measurements as they actually are. There is no compromise because there is no average to fit into.

Bring a picture

For dresses more than any other garment, images are the fastest route to a shared understanding.

Necklines, silhouettes and lengths are hard to describe and instant to recognise. Bring photographs of dresses you like, and photographs of dresses you dislike, since knowing what to avoid is equally useful. Take elements from several if you want.

We will be honest about what will and will not work for your proportions and for the fabric you have chosen, because a silhouette that looks striking in a stiff fabric can collapse in a fluid one.

Fabric and drape

Fabric choice matters more for dresses than for tailored jackets, because a dress relies on drape rather than on internal structure.

Silk falls beautifully and suits evening and cocktail dresses. Silk crepe has weight and hangs cleanly; silk satin catches light and shows every seam, so it demands accurate construction.

Linen is the most comfortable thing to wear in heat and creases immediately. For a relaxed summer dress that is fine. For a formal event it is a decision to make deliberately.

Cotton holds structure well and suits work dresses and anything with a defined shape.

Wool blends work for cooler destinations and for structured, tailored dress shapes.

Fittings matter more

A dress usually needs more fitting attention than a shirt, because there is more shaping and less tolerance.

Bust darts, waist suppression and hip room all interact, and adjusting one affects the others. Allow time for at least one proper fitting, and more if the dress is for a specific event.

If you are ordering for a wedding or a formal occasion, start early in your trip rather than late. See women’s tailoring for the fuller range.

Common questions

Yes, and it is one of the most reliable ways to order. Bring the dress in and its proportions can be taken directly, then anything you dislike about it corrected. A garment that already works is the clearest brief you can give.

It depends on the complexity of the design and the fabric. A simple shift is quick; a structured or lined evening dress needs longer and benefits from more than one fitting. Bring an image of what you want as early in your trip as possible.

Silk, cotton and linen all breathe well. Silk drapes beautifully and suits evening and cocktail dresses; linen is the coolest to wear but creases readily; cotton sits between the two and holds structure better than either.

Yes, and please do. A photograph communicates a neckline, a silhouette and a length far faster than any description. Bring several if you like different elements from each, and we will discuss what works for your proportions and the fabric.
