A blazer or sport coat is an odd jacket worn with contrasting trousers rather than as part of a suit. VIP Custom Tailor makes them to individual measurements in Chiang Mai, in cloths chosen for texture rather than the smooth finish suiting requires. For anyone who rarely needs a full suit, it is the single most useful tailored garment to own.
Most people need a jacket far more often than they need a suit.
Dinner, a meeting, travelling, a smart-casual event with no clear rules: in all of these a suit is slightly too much and a shirt alone is slightly too little. The odd jacket is the answer, and because it is not tied to matching trousers it does more work per garment than anything else in a wardrobe.
The one rule worth learning: a blazer needs texture.
Suit cloth is woven and finished to look smooth and to read as part of a set. Take that jacket away from its trousers and it looks orphaned, because nothing about it says standalone.
A good odd jacket uses cloth that announces itself: hopsack with its open basket weave, a flannel with a soft brushed surface, tweed, a linen or linen blend with visible slubs. Texture is what makes the combination look chosen rather than accidental.
For Chiang Mai’s climate, hopsack is the standout. It is a wool weave with enough openness to move air, it resists creasing, and it looks unmistakably like a jacket rather than half a suit.
The instinct with a jacket is to build it properly and heavily. In a hot climate that instinct is wrong.
Unlined or half-lined is dramatically more comfortable. A softer shoulder with less padding reads as more relaxed, which fits what the garment is for. You lose some of the sharp structure of a business jacket, and in this context that is a gain rather than a loss.
If the jacket is going home to a cooler country, the calculation reverses and a fuller construction makes sense. Say where it will be worn at the consultation. See the construction guide for the detail.
Small detail, disproportionate effect.
Suit jackets take buttons that match and disappear. Odd jackets can take horn, corozo or metal buttons that contrast deliberately. It is one of the cheapest ways to make a jacket look considered rather than generic.
Navy jacket with mid-grey trousers is the reliable combination and always looks correct. Navy with stone or tan chinos is more relaxed and works nearly as widely.
The one pairing to avoid is navy jacket with black trousers, which reads as mismatched rather than contrasting. Keep a clear difference in both colour and texture between jacket and trouser, and pair with tailored trousers cut for the same climate.

How to choose suit fabric: fibre, weight in grams, weave and the Super numbers. Which cloths work in a hot climate and which do not.
A suit jacket is cut from the same cloth as its trousers and is designed to be worn with them. A blazer is a standalone jacket meant to be worn with contrasting trousers, usually in a cloth with more texture and often with different buttons and slightly softer construction.
Usually not well. Suit cloth is smooth and finished specifically so it reads as part of a set, and worn alone it tends to look like the other half is missing. Texture is what makes an odd jacket look deliberate.
Navy, and it is not close. A navy blazer works with grey trousers, stone chinos, and almost anything else, in almost any setting from a dinner to an office. If you are buying a second, mid-grey or a textured brown earns its place.
In a hot climate, less structure is more wearable. An unlined or half-lined jacket with a soft shoulder is far more comfortable in heat and reads as more relaxed, which suits the garment’s purpose.
